Float on by with the blimp in the sky(1)

Identity & illustrations

At Kahala Management our creative services department was full of talented designers who all participated in providing designs for the corporation's various brand promotions and logos. The team was handed the ironically short creative brief for a logo design for Blimpie®'s 50th Anniversary and my eyes lit up like that one Easter(2).

Finally, an opportunity to provide Mid-Century Modern and retro inspired design for the company born on 1964. Finding inspiration anywhere I could find old photos of the store front's first appearances I thought it was very appropriate to use what worked initially. I am a firm believer in historical trust. I really wanted this logo to coinicide with the fun of vintage neon signage in Las Vegas and a perfection of the shapes and lettering in the brand's first blimp based logo iterations and googie(3) type treatments.

Blimpie's 50th anniversary

Bringin' the blimp back

I would love to sit here on my high horse(4) and describe in detail how awesome I am for coming up with this amazing concept, but just cannot it was a no brainer. Although, I can admit that the execution is well deserved of a high five.

After reading all the negative anonymous designer feedback on Under Consideration Brand New(5) Blimpie's last rebrand in summary was boring and bland. I wanted nothing but to bring a positive light back to the brand re-energizing the brand with the fun and playfulness they were known for. The NJ press published an article about the celebration at the original Blimpie read it here.

Logos with slogan

America's Sub Shop®

After the 50th Anniversary logo was approved, Kahala's new owner requested I create a couple of versions of the blimp logo with the slogan, America's Sub Shop. He wanted to put up a new sign on the corporate owned store at 9120 E Indian Bend Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85250®.

Footnotes

  • I submitted this commercial concept for one of Blimpie's Fanmercial Contests, I never heard anything back so I think employees could not win.

"Float on" By Modest Mouse playing, camera pans through a cartoon or stop-motion dream scape of the land of jolly Gnomes who live in vegetable houses. Looking up, bread loaf clouds float on by and the Blimpie Blimp sandwich flies through the air piloted by a crew of gnomes tossing out Blimpie wrapped sandwiches with parachutes. Back on the ground children and families of Gnomes reach upwards as the falling sandwiches come into reach, words drawn in the clouds read "Float on with Blimpie."
  • My mother had left a pan of flour by the door and told my sister and I, "If the Easter Bunny comes through this door we will know!" That woman's creativity will forever inspire me, she sprinkled flour in faux bunny tracks all around the room leading up to my basket and un-boxed Ghost Busters Backpack.

  • "Googie architecture is a form of modern architecture, a subdivision of futurist architecture influenced by car culture, jets, the Space Age, and the Atomic Age." Just think of Vintage Las Vegas Neon signage, retro Bowl-A-Rama's and The Jetsons.

  • My high horse's name is Sleipnir.

  • UnderConsideration's Brand New reader's were unpleased with the last rebrand, I really hope this redesign changes the minds of the most critical. Some tough love in those comments, but this one was one of my favorite:

"Big Boss Non-Designer walks into the room. "Designer, you're spending too much time on that Blimpie rebrand. Here, I can do it in five minutes..." "There, see? It's minimalistic perfection." Designer looks blankly, scared to comment and be fired as the boss has done this before. "Err... yessir... you're brilliant, sir." Big Boss Non-Designer looks over and smiles brightly. "Exactly, Designer. Just think, one of these days you'll be able to turn out something nearly as perfect just as fast. Granted that won't be for a few decades." Designer slinks to the bathroom to cry in a stall for his lunch break. - stifled / Brand New: Blimpie Loses Air, Crashes
  • You will notice there is a version of the Blimpie logo out there with the slogan in a banner lower and off set to the right I did not create.

What is Studio LXV?

Studio LXV is a satellite design studio orbiting Earth over Phoenix, Arizona. Providing quality design from international web space to anyone.

Why LXV?

L, X, & V are roman numerals representing 50, 10, and 5 adding up to 65. LXV is short for MCMLXV or 1965. Representing the chronological median of the sixties, which happens to be Christopher's favorite time period in popular culture, the Atomic Age. Finding much of his inspiration from this time period, Christopher is fascinated with Mid Century Modern design, architecture, popular culture, and of course NASA paraphernalia.
